The Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise History

Hellman's real mayonnaise got its start in 1913 when its namesake; Richard Hellmann opened up a delicatessen in New York City with his wife Margaret. By 1920; Hellman began selling his signature sauces; including his famous mayonnaise spread; already regarded as the best mayonnaise in the city.

Hellman sold two versions of his recipe; including one he regarded as the best tasting mayonnaise; his favorite version featured blue ribbons on the jars. The blue ribbon imagery remains to this day; as well as the famous recipe.
